Historic naval yard·Gosport waterfront

Beer and biscuit for the fleet

About Royal Clarence Yard

Royal Clarence Yard grew from a private brewery into the Navy’s main supplier of beer and biscuit; it took its name in 1831 from the Duke of Clarence, later William IV. Queen Victoria used a private railway station inside the yard for her journeys to and from Osborne on the Isle of Wight. Gosport Borough Council protects the yard as a conservation area, and the waterfront is now home to Royal Clarence Marina. Further south, at Haslar, the former Royal Naval Hospital was the first hospital in England built for the Navy, begun in the 1740s (Historic England).
