About Buying in Brighton & Hove: the back story

Brighton & Hove offers some of the finest Regency architecture in Britain, from the terraces and squares of Kemp Town to Brunswick Square and Adelaide Crescent in Hove. Behind them, Victorian and Edwardian streets climb the hills around Preston Park, Seven Dials and Hanover, and the coastal villages of Rottingdean and Saltdean sit under the cliffs to the east. In England, buyers use a solicitor or licensed conveyancer, ownership is registered with HM Land Registry, and Stamp Duty Land Tax may be due. We never publish prices.

Regency Brighton & Hove

Kemp Town’s terraces and Sussex Square, Marine Parade and the New Steine in the east; Regency Square in the middle; and Brunswick Square, Brunswick Terrace and Adelaide Crescent in Hove make up one of the great Regency seafronts.

Victorian streets

North of the centre, terraced streets climb around Preston Park, Seven Dials and Hanover, and the North Laine is a conservation area of small houses and shops.

Walk a neighbourhood at different times of day, and talk to a local agent before you look.

The coast and the Downs

East of the city, Rottingdean and Saltdean are coastal villages under the white cliffs; to the north, Patcham and Stanmer border the South Downs National Park.

How buying works

In England, a solicitor or licensed conveyancer handles the legal work; the sale is registered with HM Land Registry; and the buyer may owe Stamp Duty Land Tax (gov.uk). Many flats are leasehold: check the lease carefully.

Our advice: read the official guidance on gov.uk before you make an offer, and use a local solicitor.
