The chalybeate spring, discovered in the early seventeenth century, is why Tunbridge Wells exists: its water is rich in iron, manganese, zinc and calcium. The Bath House over it was built in 1804 to designs by J T Groves, and a “dipper” still serves the water when circumstances allow.
