RMS Titanic left Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York on 10 April 1912. More than three-quarters of her crew gave a Southampton address when they signed on, and SeaCity Museum tells their story. Today five cruise terminals serve the ships that sail from the port.
For more than a century Southampton has been where the great liners begin and end their voyages, and one departure above all still defines the city.
The White Star Line
On Canute Road a blue plaque on Canute Chambers marks the former headquarters of the White Star Line, the company that owned Titanic. A plaque at the entrance to the old White Star Dock marks the place from which she sailed.
Walk the Titanic Trail from Canute Chambers to the Engineers’ Memorial, then spend the afternoon at SeaCity.
10 April 1912
RMS Titanic left Southampton on 10 April 1912 on her maiden voyage to New York. Of the 897 crew shown on the Crew Wall at SeaCity Museum, more than three-quarters gave a Southampton address when they signed on, so when news of the sinking reached the city, few streets were untouched.
The crew
SeaCity Museum’s permanent exhibition, Southampton’s Titanic Story, tells the voyage through personal testimonies, interactive displays and objects, and one part of it is dedicated to the local crew who lost their lives.
The memorials
The Titanic Engineers’ Memorial in East Park, unveiled in 1914, honours the 35 engineers who stayed at their posts to the end; a plaque on London Road remembers the eight musicians who played as the ship sank; and the grounds of Holy Rood Church have carved panels and a fountain in memory of Titanic’s victims. Visit Southampton publishes a self-guided Titanic Trail that links them, along with former crew members’ homes.
The cruise port today
Associated British Ports runs five cruise terminals: the QEII and Ocean terminals in the Eastern Docks, and the City, Horizon and Mayflower terminals in the Western Docks. Horizon, the newest, was named in 2021, and ships with shore power can plug in at Horizon and Mayflower. From Southampton Central it is about a 15-minute walk to City and Horizon and about 30 minutes to Mayflower and Ocean; take a taxi to QEII. For the cruise lines that sail from here, see our sister ULTIMATE Cruises Guide.
Our advice: if you are sailing from Southampton, arrive the day before and see SeaCity first.
