Knole, beside Sevenoaks, is a 600-year-old estate with courtyards, showrooms, the Gatehouse Tower and acres of parkland with deer: keep your distance from them. Book ahead at weekends and in school holidays. Sevenoaks is about 1 h 50 from Brighton by train, with one change.
