Take the direct train to Hastings (about 1 h 10 from Brighton, once an hour). Walk through the Old Town to the fishing beach and Hastings Contemporary, ride a cliff railway up the East Hill, and carry on east along the clifftops into Hastings Country Park. Come back the same way for fish by the boats.
Getting there
Direct trains from Brighton to Hastings take about 1 hour 10 minutes, about once an hour; other trains need a change (National Rail).
The walk
From the station walk down to the seafront and east to the Old Town, between the East and West Hills. Past the fishing boats on the beach, Hastings Contemporary stands on Rock-a-Nore Road. One of the town’s two funiculars climbs the East Hill; from the top, paths lead east along the cliffs into the Country Park.
Fishing boats on the beach and a funicular up the cliff.
Safety
The sandstone cliffs are unstable: keep to the paths and back from the edge.
