About Chichester: the back story

Chichester is about 50 minutes from Brighton by direct train. Chichester Cathedral has a tapestry behind the High Altar by John Piper, unveiled in 1966, in the cathedral’s words; the Chichester Festival Theatre stages its own seasons; Pallant House Gallery shows Modern British art; and Fishbourne Roman Palace, run by Sussex Past, lies just west of the city. Goodwood, home of the Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival, is a short drive north.

The cathedral

Chichester Cathedral (chichestercathedral.org.uk): the exhibition Glowing + Alive tells the story of the Piper tapestry until 15 November 2026.

Theatre and art

Chichester Festival Theatre and Pallant House Gallery.

Check opening times and trains on the official sites before you travel.

Fishbourne and Goodwood

Fishbourne Roman Palace (Sussex Past); the Goodwood Estate’s motor-racing events, including the Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival (goodwood.com).

Our advice: take the train, walk the walls, and book the theatre ahead.
