About Carisbrooke Castle

Carisbrooke Castle, cared for by English Heritage, stands above Newport. Its most famous resident was Charles I, imprisoned here after his Civil War defeat; climb the motte for views, and meet the Carisbrooke donkeys, who still demonstrate the treadwheel that once raised water from the castle well.

Why it's on our list

  • The donkey treadwheel
  • Views from the motte

Opening hours, prices and seasonal openings change, so please check with Carisbrooke Castle before you go.
